2015 Adelina Shiraz Mataro


This is an exuberant and lively red wine. Relatively light for a Shiraz blend, there are tonnes of ripe raspberry and red fruit flavours in this mouth-watering wine. The notes just aren’t able to capture the wonderful finesse on offer. Adelina’s Shiraz/Mataro (70:30) is 100% sourced from Springfarm, Clare Valley with the Shiraz being mostly Adelina Estate fruit blended with some grapes from the Aberfeldy vineyard (now run by Jim McDowell and Anne Brown).  From vines that have been planted predominantly between 1890 and 1930, this site sits on red sandy soils on a clay base with some slate and limestone as well.  The Mataro comes off 10 year old Springfarm vines.


The Clare Valley wine region is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, with a winemaking history dating back 150 years. Today, there are more than 5,000 hectares under vine, and over 40 cellar door outlets. It lies in the Mid North of South Australia, approximately 120 km north of Adelaide. Best known for Riesling wines, Clare Valley has a landscape that changes in colour and vista each season. From the golden red in autumn, the lush greenery in spring, and the morning mist in winter, the vineyards of the Clare Valley are a picturesque site.


Great match for duck but it will also pair well with a beef stew. Barbecued red meats will match well with the tannins in the wine, as will char-grilled Portobello mushrooms or meaty sausages. A rich beef pie will also take advantage of the tannins in the wine. Will also work well with goat’s milk cheeses. The Mataro tannins and herbs will match the grassiness of the goat’s milk cheese.
