2017 Delinquente Screaming Betty Vermentino

ABOUT THE WINE

This Vermentino is made with the drinker in mind. This Riverland fruit goes through a long, slow four-week ferment, winemaker Greg Grigoriou looking for the flavors to fill out. Not wanting a skinny or anemic style of wine, he’s ensured that the texture and richness of the fruit are front and center in this release. “Sometimes you’ve got to go home with a bunch of grapes who’re ugly as sin”. Proving that ugliness and deliciousness aren’t mutually exclusive, the Screaming Betty will have you doing a lot less hollerin’ and a lot more swallowing’. Driginating in the Sardinia region of Italy, this Vermentino-packed drop of distinction from the singular Delinquente is one that you’ll want to scream about once you’re done gulping – if you’re ever done, that is. Citrus hits from a clean, crisp and florally lifted band of grapes, the Screaming Betty ain’t no “one glass wonder”. So warm up those vocal chords and get howling while you can, because once you try the Screaming Betty, ain’t nothing else coming in or going out of that lucky gob of yours.

THE REGION

The sky is the limit for the fresh look Riverlands. Known historically as a place for producing bulk wine grapes, there is plenty of exploration happening in this region. It is the ideal place to trial new varieties for the country, the warm dry climate suiting many Mediterranean varieties to a tee.

PAIRING

Vermentino with its somewhat oily character, salinity and phenolic bitterness is a wonderful wine to match with medium-weight dishes that play with rich herbs and spices. Due to its bolder intensity, you can easily match this wine with richer fish such as Salmon or even meats as bold as fennel-spiced pork sausages. One key thing to pay attention to when pairing with Vermentino is the acidity level in a dish. Vermentino often doesn’t have enough spritzy acidity needed to match against tart pickled dishes (although it will easy match with chicken tacos with a squeeze of lime). Vermentino also is an exceptional wine to pair with garlicky dishes like Pesto.
